About
Mr. Roy Yew-Hung CHAN (陈佑雄), born and raised from Los Angeles California USA, was a master's degree student in Higher Education at The University of Hong Kong(HKU), Faculty of Education. During the 2010-2011 academic year, Roy served as the Acting President for the HKU Postgraduate Student Association(PGSA) and represented over 10,000+ postgraduate students within the Graduate School at The University of Hong Kong. Roy also served as an Intern for the HKU Sustainability Office, a Residential Committee for the HKU Graduate House, as well as a Postgraduate Student Board Member for the Faculty of Education at HKU. This fall 2012, Roy will be a doctoral student at Boston College - Lynch School of Education under the Center for International Higher Education. Previously, he has been a Visiting Research Student in the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Graduate School of Education as well as the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Graduate School of Education.
Roy's primary research focuses on the building and making of world-class research institutions in China, the crossculturalism in education policy and higher education internationalization, the comparative and international education in East Asia, and the socialization experience of undergraduate and graduate students in the Asian and Pacific context. In particular, Roy is interested in the current economic, social, and education reforms at Chinese research universities and the professionalization of student affairs and services managed by higher education institutions in Asia. Roy is also interested by the changing academic profession of Chinese research universities; the rise of East Asian knowledge systems and university international partnerships; the strategic planning and program evaluation conducted at top Asian universities; and the trends of globalization and internationalization among research universities in Confucian heritage societies, such as, China, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam.
Roy's first book entitled "Students' Experience at World-Class Universities in China", was recently published on November 21, 2011 by LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing (ISBN 978-3846549056). He has served on the Editorial Advisory Board for the book “Intellectual Leadership in Higher Education: Renewing the Role of the University Professor” under Professor Bruce MACFARLANE, to be published by Routledge on April 2012 (ISBN 9780415560825).
Roy was the first cohort student to graduate from the Higher Education Policy program in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR) of China. He has appeared at several international conferences, including the CIES 2012 in Puerto Rico, 7th QS-APPLE in Philippines, and the 4th SJTU Conference on World-Class Universities in Shanghai. Roy is originally from Los Angeles, CA, USA and holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Irvine.
Roy loves to travel, and has been to over 12 countries, on three continents. In his free time, he likes to cook, read, listen to music, and write poems. In the future, Roy hopes to combine his education, work experience, and scholarship to impact policy and to enhance intercultural interaction and awareness across the world.
Roy is the recipient of the 2011 Henry Chan Inclusive Education Award ($10,000 HKD) from The University of Hong Kong - CEDARS and the 2011 Gerald H.
